We recently sat down with the delightful Heidi, owner of Maven Mercantile. Maven offers “innovative meals made from scratch that can be quickly ordered through our App & picked up on your way through town.”
VH: From where do you hail?
Heidi: I now live on Vashon, I moved here about a year and a half ago from Seattle. I wanted more space and I’m an equestrian and I have a horse down on Maury Island. I really like the small town vibe. It immediately felt like home.
VH: Tell us a little about your business…
Heidi: We offer grab and go meals plus fresh baked cookies and home made soups onsite. We do not offer catering at this time.
VH: How did your business get started?
Heidi: The business started about 6.5 years ago as a meal delivery service – we did made from scratch meals delivered to the Greater Seattle area. After a couple of years we outgrew our commercial space and moved into a storefront with bigger
production space. I really enjoyed the community interaction and got very involved with the community. That store has been open for 4.5 years.
After I moved here, I saw a need in this community for grab and go, so started plans to open the store on the island. We opened the last week of July 2017 and it’s going really well. It quieted down after tourist season but we are still doing better than expected.
VH: What is your superpower?
Heidi: My ability to manage multiple different things at the same time. I love bringing people together.
VH: When you have company visiting, where do you like to take them?
Heidi: The lighthouse, to visit my horse – his name is Bryce, walk to the Roasterie, Burton loop and the little fairy houses.
VH: What’s next for Maven Mercantile?
Heidi: Planning on putting seating outside this spring/summer. We’ve partnered with Sawbones on their lunch program. Once the outside area gets done, I’d like to create a space for events.
I just started in February a cookbook club. Every month there is a new cookbook and everyone who is coming cooks one recipe out of the cookbook and then we potluck.
VH: What’s the best thing you ever bought at Granny’s?
Heidi: I’ve never bought at Grannys – only donate. I hate shopping! Rummaging through stuff is not my favorite. I tend to go when they are not open LOL.
