We took an afternoon recently to stop by for a chat with Deja, the owner of Vashon Bodywork. Deja is such a bright light of joy and compassion! Read on to learn more about her and the services she and her team provide.
VH: From where do you hail?
Deja: I grew up playing in the snow in Park City, UT. Our family relocated to the beautiful PNW in 1998.
VH: How did you land on Vashon?
Deja: My husband and his family are from Vashon Island and after our city years we were led back to his hometown to put our own roots down in place with more room to roam. (Deja’s husband is the owner of Vashon Bikes)
VH: Tell us all about your business – what you offer, what you do, etc.
Vashon Bodywork blends the spa world with result driven care.
Our environment is welcoming, clean and has all the things you love about going to the spa (in a bigger space one day, we dream of saunas.) Our providers are trained and educated to go beyond a spa experience. We help clients manage pain, recover from injuries, manage stress, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Our aestheticians offer facials using Éminence Organic Skin Care from Hungary, certified organic sugar pastes and bees wax are used for our hair removal services.
Our massage therapists offer therapeutic care at discounted rates for clients needing focused attention and long term care, and amazing relaxation services such as our Head to Toe Session that includes a warm apricot oil scalp massage, full body dry brushing, sugar foot scrub and hot towels for the ultimate blissed out experience.
We value green practices in our industry and make business choices that directly effect the health of our clients and our planet. We offer recycle program discounts for product packaging that may otherwise end up in landfills and we use only the most pure and organic oils, creams and products.
VH: What inspired you to start your business?
I started my career in a resort spa and then moved toward more clinical environments. I wasn’t happy in either place because I wanted to blend them together. So I did. Vashon Bodywork started as a solo practice in 2012 and is now a thriving business with myself and 4+ employees. I love the creativity and artistic ability of the healing arts and am so happy to have been able to create my vision here on Vashon Island.
VH: What is your superpower?
Attracting a great team! Somehow I find the best people to bring into Vashon Bodywork, I love them and it is so fun creating a great work environment for them to hopefully thrive and love for years to come!
VH: When you have company visiting the island, where do you like to take them?
I have my secret places, but we definitely like to end up taking friends where we love to ride bikes in the Dockton Forest, and Lisabuela for sunset of course.
VH: What’s next for your business?
Vashon Bodywork will continue to expand and we look forward to the opportunity in the future to expand into a larger space where we can offer amenities like steam and saunas with a lovely lounge.
VH: What’s the best thing you ever bought at Granny’s? 🙂
They day I signed the lease on our larger space I walked into Granny’s with my list of things I absolutely needed. Three soji screens and long desk. Granny’s provided me with exactly what I asked for, and I was stoked. It’s amazing when the universe just says “here ya go.”
